A native prairie plant from the Great Plains evolved for periods of drought; a native fern from the Pacific Northwest evolved for consistent moisture. Both thrive without supplemental water in their native range because their needs match the local water availability.
The contrast with conventional garden plants is significant: non-native annual and perennial selections often require consistent irrigation throughout the growing season because they evolved in different moisture regimes. In water-restricted areas or for gardeners without irrigation systems, native plant selection dramatically reduces the watering burden.
Wildlife Value: The Ecological Argument Made Practical
The relationship between native plants and native insects is one of the most compelling arguments for natives in a residential garden — and it has practical implications beyond environmental concern. Native plant species support caterpillars that become butterflies and moths; those caterpillars are the primary food source for most songbird nestlings (a fact popularized by entomologist Doug Tallamy’s research showing that 96% of terrestrial bird species require insects to raise young).
A garden with native plants supports the insect diversity that supports birds. A garden planted entirely in non-native ornamentals supports far fewer insects — and by extension, far fewer birds. For gardeners who enjoy bird watching, native plant selection is more effective than any feeder setup.
Finding the Right Natives for Your Region
The critical specification: native to your specific region, not just native to North America or the continent. A plant native to the southeastern United States is not native to the Pacific Northwest and may perform poorly there. Local native plant sales — held by native plant societies, conservation organizations, and botanical gardens — are often the best source for regionally appropriate species that aren’t available at general garden centers. These sales typically offer knowledgeable staff who can advise on site-specific selection based on your specific sun, soil, and moisture conditions.
